Answers to 9 Blackjack Questions

River Belle Online Casino Free BlackjackThis site ranks for a lot of different blackjack questions. Everyone who finds this site in a search engine has asked a blackjack question of some kind, and they're looking for answers.

We look at our server logs to see what kinds of blackjack questions our visitors are asking. A lot of times we'll only receive a single visitor for a particular blackjack related phrase or query. Sometimes that's because we don't rank well for a particular phrase, but we can do better by writing more answers to more blackjack questions.

Here are answers to commonly asked blackjack questions.

Blackjack Questions and Answers

1. what types of card games are there?

This isn't so much a blackjack question as it is a question about card games in general. That's not going to slow us down - we'll answer the question anyway. Card games can be roughly "typed" into two groups initially:

  • Traditional card games using a 52 card deck with 4 suits and 13 ranks
  • Card games not using a traditional deck (like Magic the Gathering, for example.)

Traditional card games can be further subdivided into other types, like:

  • Combining card games (like Canasta, Rummy, or Cribbage)
  • Comparing card games (like Poker and Blackjack)
  • Shedding and accumulating card games (like Solitaire and Go Fish)
  • Trick capturing card games (like Spades or Bridge)

For more information about different types of card games, visit our main article on the subject here: Types of Card Games. Other resources include Pagat and Card Games Cafe.

2. where to play strip blackjack online? how to play strip blackjack?

We cover both the subject of where to play strip blackjack and how to play strip blackjack in a full article here: Strip Blackjack. Some people asking about "strip blackjack" might be searching for information about blackjack on the Las Vegas strip. If that's what you're looking for, you can play a free version of Las Vegas strip blackjack here.

We've even had people here looking for "free adult strip blackjack" and "lara croft strip blackjack". As far as I know, there is no lara croft strip blackjack game available online, but Lara Croft slot machines are pretty popular.

3. where can i practice blackjack free?

This one is actually pretty easy, because you can practice blackjack free anywhere you like. If you already own a deck of cards, you can practice blackjack free on your kitchen table. You don't even need chips or Monopoly money; just use buttons to bet with, or paperclips, toothpicks, or matches - whatever.

Another place where you can practice blackjack for free is the Internet. This site, Free Blackjack, offers several free blackjack games which don't even require a download. You can just practice in your browser, completely free. Other sites offer free blackjack games too.

4. where can i find low stakes blackjack?

Our article about low stakes blackjack covers where you can find low stakes blackjack online, but you might also be interested in where you can find some of the following information:

  • Low stakes blackjack in Las Vegas
  • Low stakes blackjack in Reno
  • Low stakes blackjack in Atlantic City

Your best bet for "low stakes blackjack in Las Vegas" are the older casinos, like Fremont, the Sahara, or Circus Circus. No one offers $1 blackjack anymore, but you can probably find blackjack games as low as $3 to $5 a hand at some of the older casino properties, especially in downtown Vegas.

Regarding low stakes blackjack in Reno, Cheapo Travel has some suggestions, but I don't know how up to date their page is. Still these sound like pretty good deals:

  • Circus Circus Reno sometimes deals $1 blackjack.
  • Bonanza has $2 blackjack.
  • Cal Neva, Rail City, and Western Village have $3 blackjack.

Atlantic City probably isn't the destination if you're looking for low stakes blackjack, but you can find $5 and $10 blackjack games at most of the casinos if you look. Obviously the $10 blackjack tables are easier to find there.

A related search query we've seen is "online blackjack bet limits". Most online casinos top out at about $500 a hand, and most have minimum blackjack bet limits of about $5.

5. what is standard deviation in blackjack?

Standard deviation is a mathematical term, but in blackjack, standard deviation has a very specific meaning. Standard deviation in blackjack is important to card counting specialists in particular. Stanford Wong uses a coinflipping example to explain standard deviation in blackjack here:

Flip a coin 100 times and you expect to get heads 50 times and tails 50 times. But usually you won't hit that number exactly. Standard deviation describes the reality of how you won't hit the 50/50 number very often, and describes how close you can expect to get to it. Two thirds of the time, we'll see actual results of between 45 and 55 heads and between 45 and 55 tails. So even though the expectation for blackjack might be +0.5% if you're counting, or -0.5% if you're not, your actual results will probably vary because of sheer chance.

That's standard deviation in blackjack. More about standard deviation in blackjack: Blackjack Odds.

6. where can i find adult blackjack online?

If you're looking for "adult blackjack online", then you're probably interested in our comments about strip blackjack above and on our strip blackjack page. Other than that, ALL blackjack on the Internet is adult blackjack online because all online casinos require you to be at least 18 in order to play.

7. what does "blackjack expected value" mean?

Every time you make a bet, it has an expected value. So when someone asks about blackjack expected value, they're probably looking for what kind of expected win or loss they can expect on average on every bet.

The bad news first. Blackjack, unless you're a card counter, has a negative expected value.

The good news? The negative expected value in blackjack is lower than almost any other casino game. Depending on the rules at your particular casino, blackjack has a negative expected value of about 0.5% to 1%.

More good news? If you learn how to count cards, you can change the expected value in blackjack to a positive 0.5% - 1%.

8. what is microgaming classic blackjack strategy?

The Microgaming Classic Blackjack game has a house edge of only 0.13% when played with perfect basic strategy. Here's a simple iteration of "Micorgaming Classic blackjack strategy":

Hard hands

  1. Always stand on any hard 17 or higher.
  2. Stand on a hard 13 through 16 if the dealer has a 2 through 6 showing, otherwise hit.
  3. Play a hard 12 just like a hard 13 through 16 with this exception: hit if the dealer has a 2 or 3 showing.
  4. Double down on a hard 10 or 11 if the dealer has anything other than a ten or ace showing. If the dealer has a ten or ace showing, just hit.
  5. Double down on a hard 9 if the dealer has a 2 through 6 showing; otherwise just hit.
  6. Always hit a hard 8 or less.

Soft hands

  1. Always hit a soft 17 or less.
  2. Always stand on a soft 19 or higher.
  3. Stand on soft 18 UNLESS the dealer has a 9 or 10 showing. In that case, hit.

Splitting

  1. Always split aces.
  2. Never split 4's, 5's, or 10's. (Always hit the fours, always stand on the tens, and treat a pair of fives as a hard ten and double down against anything but a dealer ace or ten.)
  3. Split a pair of 9's versus a dealer's 2-6, or 8 or 9. Otherwise stand.
  4. Split a pair of 8's against everything but a dealer 10 or ace. Otherwise stand.
  5. Split a pair of 7's if the dealer has a 7 or lower. Stand versus a dealer 10. Otherwise hit.
  6. Split a pair of 6's if the dealer has a 6 or lower showing. Otherwise hit.
  7. Split a pair of 3's against a dealer showing 4, 5, 6, 7. Otherwise hit.
  8. Split a pair of 2's against a dealer showing a 3 through 7. Otherwise hit.

Most blackjack strategies are presented as charts, but for me, it's easier to learn as rules. The strategy presented above is a perfect basic strategy and consists of only 17 rules to memorize, most of which are pretty easy to remember. If you live in an area where Microgaming Classic Blackjack is available for real money, then we recommend the game along with this Microgaming Classic Blackjack strategy.

9. what are the odds of getting a blackjack in a single deck of cards?

I saw this question in the referral logs and thought, man, that's hard. Then I thought wait a minute. Calculating the odds of getting a blackjack in a single deck of cards isn't that hard at all really. You just calculate the odds of getting a ten as your first card, and the odds of getting an ace as your second card. The odds of getting a ten are pretty easy to calculate. You have 16 tens in the deck, out of 52 possible outcomes, so your chances of getting a ten as your first card is 16/52. Then your chances of getting an ace as your next card is 4/52, which can be reduced to 1/13. Then you multiple those by each other. 16/52 X 1/13 = 16/676, which can then be reduced to 4/169. But you have two ways of making a blackjack - you can get an ace on the first card and the ten on the second card, or vice versa, which means you double this. That changes the odds to 8/169, which means you'll get a blackjack out of a single deck of cards approximately once out of every 21 hands.

10. what is the house edge on vegas technology blackjack?

Vegas Technology blackjack offers a house edge of 0.73% on their best blackjack game. That's assuming you play with perfect basic strategy. Vegas Technology casinos include Golden Casino and Millionaire Casino, among others.
