Online Blackjack Daddy's Guide to Card Games
A card game is any type of game played with playing cards. Many types of card games use a traditional deck of cards, but many other card games use specific decks created specifically for that game. Poker and blackjack are played using a traditional deck of 52 cards, while Magic the Gathering and Illuminati are examples of card games using specially designed decks. Traditional Card GamesA traditional deck of cards has 52 cards which are divided into suits and ranks. The suits are spades, hearts, diamonds, and clubs. The ranks are kings, queens, jacks, and the numbers one through ten. Ones are also called aces, and in many games, an ace can be considered high or low. Some traditional decks include jokers, which are used as wild cards. Types of Card GameCard games can be categorized by the mechanics of the game as well into the following categories:
Some card games, like Tripoley, can belong to multiple card game types. The above list isn't a complete list either; other categories may exist. Trick Taking Type Card GamesTrick taking games involve rounds of play where the player plays one card from her hand in order to take a trick. In trick taking card games, a rule determines which player has to play first, then play usually proceeds clockwise from there. (The first player has the "lead".) Rules determine which card wins the trick. Usually a "trump" card or suit is part of the rules. Examples of trick taking card games include Spades, Bridge, Euchre, and Pinochle. Rummy Type Games
Solitaire GamesSoltaire card games are card games played by one person with no opponents. Solitaire card games are also called "patience" games. Klondike is the most commonly played version of solitaire, but even video poker can be considered a solitaire card game, since it involves only one player. Shedding GamesThe goal of each player in a shedding type of card game is to get rid of all of the cards in her hand. Each game has different rules for how to "shed" the cards from the hand. Crazy eights is probably the best known shedding game, but Skip-Bo and Uno are also popular shedding games which use specially made decks. Accumulating GamesAccumulating games are the opposite of shedding cards. Instead of having a goal of getting rid of all your cards, the goal is to accumulate everyone else's cards. Screw your neighbor is a good example of an accumulating game. Fishing GamesFishing games involve each player having a hand and another set of cards being laid out on the table. When a player plays a card and it matches one of the cards on the table, the card is captured. Cards that are played but don't match any of the cards on the table become part of the layout. Casino is the most commonly played fishing game in the Western world. Comparing GamesComparing games involve comparing a hand of cards with your opponents' cards. Different games have different criteria for which hands beat which other hands. Comparing card games can be as complex as poker, or as simple as blackjack or war.
